Lizzibeth CELEBRITEES

A celebrity is defined as a celebrated person. Lizzibeth wants to embrace this definition and create a line called CELEBRITEES to pay tribute to influential people in the community and honor the hard work they have accomplished. Each CELEBRITEE is designed to embrace the beauty of local leaders and their individual impact at work and in the community.

Meet Kristin

Wife to a wonderful husband and mother to three beautiful girls, Kristin Burkemper is the jewelry designer and creator behind Bird's Tail Designs. Kristin's days are filled with taking care of her three beautiful girls, practicing and teaching yoga and designing and creating her feminine, meaningful jewelry pieces in her home studio in Whitefish Bay, WI. Kristin designs each of her pieces with the goal of making women feel beautiful and empowered; each of her designs reflects a love and passion for sacred symbols and natural beauty.
Why did you decide to pursue a career in jewelry design?
I worked in a high end jewelry store and really couldn't afford the pieces that I was selling. I saw a need there - a need for a jewelry line that looks and feels expensive, but doesn't cost a small fortune - this is why I decided to make and sell my own pieces. I want women to be able to afford beautiful, high quality jewelry, and most of all, I want them to feel beautiful wearing it.

What was your inspiration behind your t-shirt design?
To spread MKE love. I have lived in several sates around the country, and I have never experienced kindness quite like I have from the people here in Milwaukee. Just going for a walk or run, passersby always smile and say hello - that's not the case everywhere. There is so much love here, a love that I first encountered when I moved here to attend Marquette University. Marquette provided me with a great education, but most importantly with a strong sense of community and keen understanding of human kindness and empathy. With so much negativity going on in the world, why not spread a positive message? Let's all spread a little MKE love!

What is your most memorable accomplishment in your business career?
Definitely leaving my job as a high school English teacher to pursue my passion for design. I was pregnant with my third child when I decided to leave teaching, and it was incredibly scary to think about raising three girls and starting my own business. But I had a creative passion that I knew I had to follow.

What is your favorite go-to spot in Milwaukee?
The Milwaukee Art Museum. The art and architecture is inspiring. On the first Sunday of the month, they offer yoga at the museum. This is one of my favorite things to do here. I love to strap my yoga bag on my back, hop on my bike and take the bike path down to the museum. The combination of biking, yoga and beauty can't be beat.

What is one of your favorite places to visit in Milwaukee?
I don't have one favorite place, but I love exploring all of the boutiques, antique shops and restaurants that the Third Ward and south side of Milwaukee have to offer. I don't often get a chance to make a day of this kind of activity, but every once in a while I do - and it's even better when exploring with girlfriends!

Who/What inspires you the most?
Nature. I love being outside - whether in the sun or the snow. I am especially inspired by the lake - living near the water has always been really important to me. Water has this calming and inspiring effect.

What is your favorite place to eat in Milwaukee?
La Merenda. I LOVE good food, and La Merenda never disappoints.  My husband and I rarely get a chance to get out for a date night, but when we do, this is one of our favorite spots. We like to belly up to the bar and share as many small plates as our stomachs will allow - and the cocktails are always great too!

What advice would you give other business women trying to advance their career?
Trust your instincts. One of my favorite quotes is from Sylivia Plath, a quote which is on my studio wall right now: “The worst enemy to creativity is self-doubt”.  I remind myself of these words each day - just when I begin to question my business or creative choices, I remember to trust myself - only then can I reach my true potential.
